Commission welcomes agreement on major reform of EU pharmaceutical rules
The European Commission has welcomed a political agreement reached by the European Parliament and the Council to modernise the EU pharmaceutical legislation — the most significant overhaul in over 20 years.
The reform aims to strengthen patient access to medicines, boost innovation, and improve the resilience of the EU’s medicine supply. It introduces updated regulatory procedures to make drug authorisation more efficient, supports competitive investment in life sciences, and enhances the transparency and safety of medicines across the Union. This modernised framework will better address current and future challenges in healthcare, while ensuring high standards of quality and public health protection.
The political agreement must now be formally adopted by the European Parliament and the Council before it becomes EU law.
