The Project

EDITH was a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) funded by the European Commission (EC), capitalising on the developments of digital technologies, employment of high-performance computing (HPC), availability and access to research and healthcare data in Europe, with the mission of creating a roadmap to go from the currently available resources (which often focus on a single organ or a single function system) to a data-driven and knowledge-driven fully integrated multi-scale and multi-organ whole-body Virtual Human Twin.

EDITH-CSA facilitated this process by building an inclusive ecosystem driven by a consensus among the relevant European communities following RRI principles, and building a proof-of-concept infrastructure consisting of a data/model repository (and catalogue), as well as a simulation platform.

Our role in the project

Within the EDITH project, VPH played a central role as Project Coordinator. Specifically, we  led the work on “Vision & Roadmap”, alongside “Ecosystem Building” and liaison with “Advisory boards”. We mapped and engaged stakeholders across the European healthcare and research communities, fostering collaboration and promoting the project’s objectives and outcomes.  In addition to ensuring effective coordination, our communication, and dissemination efforts helped maximize EDITH’s visibility, impact, and outreach on the vision of the ecosystem of digital twins in healthcare,in Europe and beyond.

  • Stewardship of in-person and online Ecosystem gatherings, which brought together EDITH Community of Practice with over 800+ active contributors.
  • Drafting and championing the Virtual Human Twin Manifesto, with over 60+ initial signatories including industrial actors, academic institutes, professional associations, and patient organisations.

Outcomes

The VHT roadmap provides a comprehensive framework and set of recommendations for stakeholders to effectively contribute to the development and implementation of this transformative technology. Embracing the principles outlined in this roadmap will pave the way for a future where healthcare is personalized, predictive, and participatory, leading to improved health outcomes for all.
