Episode 5: In Silico Clinical Trials
Drug and device testing is long and costly, with few successes. In silico trials use virtual patients to speed development, cut costs, reduce animal testing, and enable faster, safer access to new treatments.
Before a drug or medical device can be used, it undergoes extensive pre-clinical and clinical trials to ensure safety and effectiveness. This process can take years and cost millions, with only 1 in 10 drugs reaching the market. However, computer-simulated trials, or in silico trials, can streamline this process by using virtual populations based on real patients. These trials reduce the need for animal and human testing, speed up innovation, and promote early patient access, emphasizing collaboration among various stakeholders.
